Redwings in the frosty winter fields
The arrival of the redwings from the north often bring a cold blast of arctic air with them, and a deep frost that settles across the fields. Along with the fieldfares, the redwings are difficult to miss at this time of the year, especially as the flocks take to the air when disturbed, wheeling away and taking to the branches of distant trees.
It is the nature of so many birds in flocks which often distract us from the beauty and striking colour of the individuals, but a closer look reveals a bird worth looking closely at.
This was something I had to relearn over time, for often it is identifying the species of bird that we focus on, or counting them if numbers are relevant, and we forget to look more closely, to seek out the individual, and to just enjoy what is in front of us.
