The Paintings Gallery

From oils to acrylics, watercolours to etching, Noel has over time selected different mediums in order to honour his creative vision. Inspired by the broadest sweep of landscapes to the intimacy of a robin upon a close branch, this is a journey that does not begin at the easel, but rather with the resonance and inspiration that Noel experiences as he encounters and engages with his world, giving rise to a creative focus which is then shared through his paintings.

A sense of place

"There are aspects to landscapes that speak to more than the eye, for they engage us in a deeper conversation. To the creative sensibility, these moments require a response that becomes very direct, visceral even, resulting in a journey that pulls us into the heart of the creative challenge. But it is from these encounters that some of my truest works have found form."

Noel Ashton, 2022

Building a new programme

In 2023, a new programme will be launched with a new series of paintings depicting the natural history of England. Each work seeks to offer the viewer an encounter with the ecology of the landscape.

The Oceans Paintings

The gallery below shows a selection of paintings selected from an archive of over a hundred works. These are scientific paintings which are based on the highly accurate species illustrations now placed within a marine setting so as to give each whale or dolphin a true and emotive context.

The 52 Artworks - A Year in Nature paintings

This is a selection of some of the large format paintings which Noel created as a part of his 52 Artworks - A Year in Nature programme. Each week for the period of a year he created and posted a new artwork on social media and in Africa Geographic magazine, each accompanied by his thoughts around the process and the subject matter as a way to invite readers back into the space of nature in an engaging and unique way.
