Synthesizing Art, Science and Storytellings

Storytelling is something intrinsically human, and for thousands of years stories where told by the light of the fire under a full African moon, when people came together to share and remember, the children wide-eyed as the elders gave the gifts from their lives, stories of the hunt, the birth of life and the way the world was formed, and how we now sit alongside the elephant and the rhino, cosmologies and sacred stories held in that moment, and then passed down through the generations.

“I have the privilege of being a storyteller, and although I now use projectors and computers to combine images and sounds with storylines from the heart, the aim is still the same, to bring people together and to take them on a journey back to their own hearts, for they are the storytellers of tomorrow.” (Noel 2016)

By seamlessly blending his art and experiences with scientific training and philosophies, Noel’s public talks take his audiences on unique journeys of unforgettable encounters. Whether it is along the shore and into the oceans, offering close encounters with many of the world’s fascinating whale and dolphin species, or into the mountains and the search for our own identity as seen through the eyes of a Bushman, or into the studio and the thoughts and contemplations of a sculptor, each is designed to speak directly from the heart and share the human journey of an unusual adventurer. This he does by incorporating original paintings, illustrations and field notes with photographs and video, making the experience one-of-a-kind, and along the way engaging the narrative through the eyes of an artist, the thoughts of a scientist and the passions of a storyteller.

“I have been an Audio Visual producer for 20 years and have been involved in many presentations and Noel Ashton’s presentation on whales and dolphins had me riveted from start to finish.” (Mick Hedderman, Cape Town Tour Guide Association)

“Your journey was fascinating, your artwork stunning and your talk powerful. What I love about you is you don’t preach, you just talk from the heart.” (Michaela Strachan, Wildlife TV Presenter)

A BRIEF OUTLINE OF NOEL’S AUDIO-VISUAL TALKS

  • JOURNEYS IN SEARCH OF THE WHALE
This thought-provoking presentation takes the audience on a philosophical journey in search of the whale and the deeper issues influencing our relationship with the natural world around us. “Our relationship with the whale can tell us much about ourselves, for we encounter them across a range of experience, from the deep connection that many feel to these mysterious mammals of the deep, to the total disregard of the whaler as he fires an explosive headed harpoon into the body of a sentient being. This broad scope offers us a fascinating mirror with which to learn more about how we think and feel, and offer insights into our relationship with the earth”.

  • CLOSE ENCOUNTERS WITH WHALES AND DOLPHINS
This popular talk takes the audience on a whirlwind tour around the globe, looking at various species of whales and dolphins and exploring their hidden worlds and diverse habitats. From the Gray whale migrations at Baja California, to southern Africa’s endemic dolphin found only on the West Coast, to our winter visitor’s the southern right whales, this talk is filled with extraordinary facts and information that will keep you fascinated from beginning to end, and will forever change the way you see the oceans.

  • WHALE WATCHING 101
Noel’s passion for whale watching, his dedication to the science of morphologically mapping each species, and his diverse experiences with whales and dolphins over the years make this lecture a treasure-trove of anecdotal facts and information. Using his internationally acclaimed illustrations and behavior diagrams, photographs and knowledge, this talk is utterly unique and will greatly enhance your next whale and dolphin encounter. Actually, this talk is an encounter with whales and dolphins like no other.

  • SPECIALIST WHALE WATCHING OUTINGS
Over the years, Noel has guided many groups on whale watching trips around Hermanus and Cape Town. A walk along the cliff path or sitting at the edge of the sea is enhanced greatly by his in-depth understanding of whales and dolphins and their ocean environments.
