Wildlife artists, by virtue of their subject matter, need to not only engage with their subjects on a physical level, but to truly capture the essence of an animal, an emotional involvement is important as well. As a consequence of this, the threats and damage being inflicted on the natural world and its living beings are profoundly felt by wildlife artists, and many are driven to try to make a difference and to reverse this alarming trend. Noel is no exception, and uses his art to focus awareness on the threats to whales and dolphins in various programmes, all under the banner of Oceans of Africa, the conservation aspect of the Whale Studio. Apart from frequent public lectures, radio interviews and television appearances, Noel has focused attention on many ongoing conservation initiatives, some of which are listed below.
