THE WHALES RETURN TO OUR SHORES

Winter in the Cape signals the return of our great ocean travelers, the southern right whales, who have traversed vast distances across the southern oceans from their feeding grounds in Antarctica, to spend the winter months in the calm, sheltered bays along the southern African coastline.

Trips along the coast are filled with magical moments as we scan the bays for a familiar V-shaped blow or look out for mother and calf pairs, resting quietly in the inshore waters.

More on this soon…

Key identification features when watching southern right whales (from top left clockwise) - a black tail with a distinct notch in the middle; off-white callosities on the head; a noticeably V-shaped blow; a broad, paddle-shapped flipper
