JOURNEYS LAUNCHED AT THE AQUARIUM
28 July 2010
Journeys is the latest conservation initiative created by Noel and Belinda in partnership with Sarah Campbell-Pitt and was launched at an evening function at the Two Oceans Aquarium. Guests were invited to light a candle around the Sacred Ocean sculpture as a gesture in support of the campaign’s anti-whaling message; Noel then presented Journeys in the Auditorium and afterwards engaged in an open dialogue session with Helen Lockhart.

NOEL INTRODUCES JOURNEYS TO THE SPCA

Noel was honoured to be the guest speaker at a special luncheon function of the SPCA today, where he introduced the Journeys programme and spoke with special emphasis on the role that cruelty to animals, and especially the brutality of whaling, has had on his motivation to create Journeys and speak of these important but disturbing human issues.

INTERVIEW ON WHALE STRANDINGS FOR THE NATURAL HISTORY UNIT

Today the whale studio was transformed into a television studio as Homebrew Films interviewed Noel about his experiences with strandings, in preparation for a documentary feature. Further work with Homebrew is scheduled for the Shorelines production later in the year.


NOEL PRESENTS A WHALE TALK AT ROUND SQUARE CONFERENCE

Round Square is an international youth organization whose IDEALS are internationalism, democracy, environment, adventure, leadership and service. Noel presented ‘Encounters with Whales and Dolphins’ to a packed hall of learners who had gathered in Simon’s Town for the 2010 Conference.


TWO OCEANS AQUARIUM PARTNERS WITH JOURNEYS

‘Journeys in Search of the Whale’ took a significant leap forward today when Dr Pat Garratt confirmed that the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town are officially partnering with Noel on this unique environmental initiative. This second phase of the Sacred Ocean campaign is the latest in a long list of collaborations with this prestigious and internationally-respected institution.

‘Journeys in Search of the Whale’ (in a pre-release simplified format) was presented for the first time at the innovative 2010 Freewheeling Festival in Stanford over the weekend. This is an important environmental initiative that was co-founded by Marian Goodman and actor Jonathan Rands.


NOEL INVITED TO LECTURE AT SCIFEST 2010

Noel has just returned from Grahamstown where he presented a series of lectures at the National Science Festival. He spoke about his career as a whale and environmental specialist, with special reference to his work with Warner Bros Free Willy 4. He also presented a Frontiers of Science Lecture at Rhodes University, where he described his morphological mapping research and scientific illustration processes.


MASS STRANDINGS - PUBLIC LECTURE

Involvement in the unsuccesful recovery of 55 False Killer Whales in Kommetjie resulted in Noel presenting a lecture by invitation at the MTN ScienCentre explaining these sad events. He also participated in a panel discussion on a Third Degree television feature with Deborah Patta. Much public debate and confusion surrounded this event, and Noel was asked to clarify and add perspective to the strandings phenomena, during the public lecture, on television and various radio stations.


NOEL CONSULTS FOR WARNER BROS ONFREE WILLY 4’

Since November 2008, Noel has been collaborating with film-makers and modellers to create an extremely accurate animatronic killer whale for Free Willy 4, the latest in the series with Warner Bros. He has also been working with Black Ginger Productions creating highly-accurate animated footage for this feature using cutting-edge CGI processes.


SACRED OCEAN RECEIVES A MAORI BLESSING

The fight for the whales received another signficant endorsement today when Rawiri Paratene, the renowned New Zealand actor best known for his role in the iconic film Whale Rider, voted in the ‘Sacred Ocean - Global Voices Against the Cruelty of Whaling’ campaign. Paratene, who played the lead role as the grandfather Kora in the award-winning 2003 film, voted at the Two Oceans Aquarium and gave the sculpture a sacred Maori blessing.


ARCHBBISHOP TUTU LAUNCHES SACRED OCEAN

On the 27 November 2008 the Sacred Ocean campaign was launched by Archbishop Tutu at a wonderful event at the Two Oceans Aquarium in Cape Town. Created by Noel and Belinda in partnership with the International Fund for Animal Welfare and the Two Oceans Aquarium, Sacred Ocean and the Great Whaling Debate have made a strong stand against the brutality of modern-day whaling.


TEAM RUSSIA AND THE VOLVO YACHT RACE

In November 2008, Noel took Team Russia whale watching in Hermanus. This self-funded team, in association with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, is aligning with the race in order to promote marine protected areas around the world.

NOEL CONSULTS FOR GERMAN TV

A two-part series for German television was filmed in Cape Town around the story of a whale researcher who is also a sculptor. Noel was approached to get involved with this project in a consulting capacity, as five 12m southern right whale casts needed to be created for a stranding scene. This process involved using the latest 3-D digital technology to generate the original shape, which was then scaled up and moulded to size for production.
