The preparatory work
Before Noel started sculpting horses, he approached his new subject in a similar way that he initiated his cetacean sculptures, by detailed anatomical studies so as to understand his subject matter intimately. He believes that it is only through this form of rigorous study that the artist can then move on, away from this complexity and without further reference to his notes, and find the freedom to speak of the horse within a space of intuitive creative flow.
