Horses in Bronze
              - a timeless elegance

"How does one speak of the horse, an animal of such complexity that so many words are used to speak of them: powerful, majestic, wilful, gentle, words which can describe a whole herd, or even a single horse at different times."

There is a reason that the artists have been drawn to these elusive animals throughout the ages, and Noel's work joins this exclusive genre but in a distinctive and unique voice through his search to capture the fluid symmetry and grace of movement - sculptures which are now held in collections around the world.

Wind Horse was the star of the show…” Carina du Randt, Curator, Cavalli Gallery

“Meeting artist-sculptor Noel Ashton in his studio is a humbling experience. This is a place where sculptures breathe and paintings move. This is a place where art has been taken so seriously that it becomes something complex, something anatomically precise, something real.”

The preparatory work

Before Noel started sculpting horses, he approached his new subject in a similar way that he initiated his cetacean sculptures, by detailed anatomical studies so as to understand his subject matter intimately. He believes that it is only through this form of rigorous study that the artist can then move on, away from this complexity and without further reference to his notes, and find the freedom to speak of the horse within a space of intuitive creative flow.
